Our Hiring Process

Stage 1

Applied

Thank you for choosing Square One. Once you submit your resume and cover letter through our portal, our talent team dives in to learn about your skills, experiences, and unique perspective. We review every application personally. If this matches the qualifications that we have listed on the job posting, we will set up a phone interview to know more about your experience and expectations.
Stage 2

Phone Interview

If there’s a potential match, we'll jump on a quick call with you. This will be a 15-30 minute phone call where we explore your qualifications, knowledge and experiences. This chat will also explore on your expectations and answer any questions you may have about the role.

This stage is all about the fundamentals: your career goals, our company culture, and the high-level details of the role. Think of it as a casual conversation to see if we’re speaking the same language.
Stage 3

Technical Interview

In this stage, we’ll dive into your actuarial experience and technical toolkit. You’ll meet with members of our data science team to discuss your hands-on experience with auto pricing, statistical modelling, and programming (like R and SQL). We'll also explore how you approach complex pricing problems and communicate your findings to non-technical stakeholders.
Stage 4

Assessments

We believe in your resume, but we love seeing your craft in action. Depending on the role, this might be a cognitive assessment, personality quiz, technical coding challenge, a creative brief, or a situational case study. We design these to be relevant and respectful of your time—focusing on the real-world problems you’ll actually be solving with us.
Stage 5

Final Interview

This is a 45-minute to an hour discussion with the Product and Underwriting Director and Finance VP exploring the how and why of your previous professional experience. Our goal is to move beyond "what" you did and understand your specific methodology and decision-making process.

During this session, we will dive into your past projects to discuss your problem-solving approach, the challenges you encountered, and the reasoning behind the solutions you chose. This is a collaborative conversation designed to see how you apply your technical expertise to real-world scenarios and how you weigh competing priorities to achieve the best outcome.
Stage 6

Reference Check

We are excited to learn more about your professional journey through the lens of those who have worked alongside you. This process helps us validate your experience and gain deeper insights into how we can best support your growth should you join our team. We value your privacy and the time of your professional network, so we typically only reach out to a select few references to confirm your background and celebrate your past achievements. Rest assured, we will always coordinate with you before making any contact to ensure the timing is right.
Stage 7

Offer

Once we’ve seen what you can do, and we want you on the team, we’ll extend a formal offer detailing your compensation, benefits, and other details. We’ll walk you through the fine print and answer any lingering questions to make sure you’re as confident in us as we are in you.

Stage 8
